Compound with the symbol CaO obtained by calcination of limestone rocks. It is produced by the thermal decomposition of carbonated minerals in furnaces at temperatures of 800-1200°C. At room temperature it appears as a colorless and odorless solid. It is also known by the name of quicklime. Calcium (Ca) is found in soils in the form of carbonates, sulphates and silicates. Plant life is affected by the presence of limestone (formation of calcium carbonate), both total and in its finer form called "active limestone". The latter fraction has a decisive influence on the pH of the soil by raising it and thus influencing the availability of various elements such as phosphorus, iron, boron. In vegetable tissues, calcium confers greater mechanical resistance to the walls, a very important factor in fruits because it makes them less susceptible to handling.
