Terrain classification (in textural classes) is based on the percentage report of the following elements that compose it: clay, silt and sand. The soil texture depends on distribution of mineral particles dimensions that constitute its solid part. USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) categorization classifies terrains based on the size (diameter) of particles of the different elements present in the soil:
- clay (diameter of less than 0.002 millimeters)
- silt (diameter between 0.002 and 0.05 millimeters)
- sand (diameter between 0.05 and 2 millimeters)
