Sulfur trioxide

Chemical compound with the formula SO3, which takes the name of sulfur trioxide. At environmental temperature it can exist in liquid or solid form. Reacts violently with water turning into steaming sulfuric acid or oleum. In industry it is prepared in large quantities by oxidizing SO2 sulfur dioxide with atmospheric oxygen at a temperature of 450°C. Sulfur (S) is an essentially plastic element and is found in plants as a constituent of some important amino acids (cystine, cysteine, methionine) which in turn make up proteins. It also becomes part of other important components such as coenzymes and vitamins. Sulfur is absorbed only in anionic form and is present in the soil in inorganic and organic form. The inorganic forms of the element in the soil are largely represented by sulphates and sulphides. The amount of sulphates present also has a significant influence on the pH of the soil. The organic form, an essential component for bacterial flora, consists of plant residues and plays an important role, as in many cases it is the most important source for the supply of plants. The importance of sulfur is therefore linked to both protein synthesis and chlorophyll photosynthesis.
