Calcium (Ca) is found in soils in the form of carbonates, sulphates and silicates. Plant life is affected by the presence of limestone (formation of calcium carbonate), both total and in its finer form called "active limestone". The latter fraction has a decisive influence on the pH of the soil by raising it and thus influencing the availability of various elements such as phosphorus, iron, boron. In vegetable tissues, calcium confers greater mechanical resistance to the walls, a very important factor in fruits because it makes them less susceptible to handling.
